Huntington Explorers Summer Camp

Huntington Explorers is a day camp with new and exciting classes geared for children ages 5-12. The classes celebrate the wonders of the Huntington through garden explorations, hands-on activities, gallery investigations and educational fun. Participants can register for a single week or multiple weeks. Morning (9:30 a.m. - noon), afternoon (1 - 3:30 p.m.), or full day enrollment (9:30 - 3:30) is available.

Week 1: July 28 - Aug. 1

Ages 5-6 — Morning Class

Huntington Treasures   Filled

Discover the treasures within the Huntington! We’ll explore the galleries, trek through the gardens, tiptoe past rare books, listen to stories, visit secret places, hang out with the wildlife and create our own Huntington treasures! Instructor: Quinton Bemiller

Ages 5-6 — Afternoon Class

Fun with Food Filled
Have fun playing with food and turning it in to edible art along the way!

We will learn how to eat a rainbow of fruits and veggies and the simple, fun snacks we can make with them. We will also discover how our senses are involved in choosing the foods we eat. Instructor: Lisa Fontanesi

Ages 7-8 — Morning Class

Is It Art?  Filled

This class will explore the answers to the question “Is It Art” as only the Huntington can. We will unlock the secrets of form, function, and presentation as we view the collections, gardens, and edifices of the Huntington and create our own works of art in a wide variety of media.

Ages 7-8 — Afternoon Class

Sticks and Stones  Filled

Sticks and stones won’t break our bones as we learn about all the amazing things nature provides us. We’ll grow our own crystals, make useful clay objects and more, as we explore Earth Science and related art activities!

Ages 9-10 — Morning Class

Slime, Mold & Microbes  Filled

Learn about what looms under beds, on old bread, and in the corners of rooms. Use microscopes to learn about the intricacies of things we rarely see. Let's grow slime mold and bake some bread as we learn to distinguish between the good, the bad, and the useful microscopic organisms. Instructor: Tara Gomez

The Huntington’s Greek and Roman columns, Japanese pagodas, Chinese pavilions and animal architecture will inspire young architects to create their own buildings and homes.  Let’s explore the gardens and then create amazing architectural drawings, blueprints, and paper and clay structures!  Instructor: Melissa Manfull

Ages 11-12 — Morning Class

Printmaking

From fingerprints to patterns on clothes, to the engravings on a dollar bill, we’ll see how printmaking is used in our everyday lives. We’ll explore many different techniques including silk-screening, etching, and relief prints and make a wide variety of art including clothing, posters, and books. Instructor: Melissa Manfull.

Ages 11-12 — Afternoon Class

Forensic Explorers

Someone has stolen a valuable plant from the Huntington Garden's collections! Let's use the latest forensic advances to figure out who and why. We'll use microscopes, we'll analyze finger prints and DNA, and we'll get to the bottom of this case. Instructor: Tara Gomez

Week 2: Aug. 4 - Aug. 8

Ages 5-6 — Morning Class

Creepy Crawlies  Filled

Six legs, eight legs, or no legs, how do you prefer your creepy creatures?  We’ll learn to appreciate the hard work our little friends do for the environment as we collect and inspect specimens, draw, sculpt, paint and have a buggy time!  Instructor: Quinton Bemiller

Ages 5-6 — Afternoon Class

Our Five Senses  Filled

Join us as we explore the Huntington using our eyes, ears, touch, smell, and taste and then create works of art inspired by our journeys of discovery! Instructor: Peggy Hasegawa

Inventors Time Machine   Filled

Join us for an exciting adventure as we travel through time! Discover interesting facts about inventors showcased at the Huntington and known throughout history. Then zoom to the future and create your own invention!  Instructor: Felicia Taylor


Ages 7-8 — Afternoon Class

Seedy Things Are the Pits!  Filled

Join us as we investigate how seeds, pits, spores, fruits and nuts keep our favorite plants going strong!  Plant lab activities and art projects will provide opportunities to learn about the survival of unique plants from around the world!  Instructor: Quinton Bemiller

Ages 9-10 — Morning Class

Indigenous Plants  Filled

Learn about native Southern California plants and how Native Americans use them to make baskets, jewelry, ropes and art. We’ll create sculptures and paintings using a variety of plants such as Whipple Yucca, Oak trees and Juncus.  Instructor: Melissa Manfull

Ages 9-10 — Afternoon Class

Talk show Time

Discover fascinating facts about the inhabitants living within the walls of the Huntington and share their stories on the "Museum Talk Show."  Through the magic of theater bring interesting characters from paintings, statues and artifacts to life!  Instructor: Felicia Taylor

Ages 11-12 — Morning Class

Handmade Books

From beautifully shaped books to fun accordion books, we'll create a variety of books and learn fun ways to decorate letters as we write about our Huntington adventures. Instructor: Peggy Hasegawa

Ages 11-12 — Afternoon Class

Photography

All you need is the sun and light sensitive material to create beautiful artwork. We’ll use some simple techniques such as pinhole cameras and sun prints to learn about photography and composition and use the gardens as our inspiration.  Instructor: Melissa Manfull

Week 3:  August 11 - August 15

Ages 5-6 — Morning Class

Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water   Filled
The Four Elements will be the focus of this class as we learn just how amazing Mother Nature truly is!  From volcanoes and tornadoes, to the desert and the ocean, we’ll take a journey that includes experiments, nature walks and art making.  We’ll have a blast!

Ages 5-6 — Afternoon Class

Animal Kingdom  Filled

Enjoy the many tales of nature's fun and furry friends as we explore the wonderful “story world” of animals. Join us as we create our own animal characters from stories, and discover how they live and playInstructor: Felicia Taylor

Where in the World…  Filled

Join us as we visit the gardens and galleries and learn about different countries and cultures in the process! Learn fun facts and create art inspired by our trip around the world!  Instructor: Peggy Hasegawa

Ages 7-8 — Afternoon Class

Botanical Sculpture

We’ll create our own carnivorous plants and out-of-this-world succulents using a variety of materials such as papier mache, clay, and found objects. Each student will invent their own imaginary plant inspired by the weird and wonderful Huntington botanicals. Instructor: Melissa Manfull

Beautiful Books

Books aren’t just for reading! We will create books that bend, fold, move and make noise. Our books will come alive using paper, paint, origami, pop-ups and lots of amazing stories. Instructor: Melissa Manfull
