Smith on Wry: Jack Smith, Columnist for Our Times

Feb. 15, 2008 - May 12, 2008

Library West Hall

The late Los Angeles Times columnist Jack Smith, who died in 1996, was one of the most prominent L.A. newspapermen of the 20th century. Smith’s regular column ran in the Times  from 1958 to 1994 and was beloved by readers for his essays on everyday subjects written with grace, eloquence, and humor. Smith’s family donated his archive to the Huntington Library, where it serves as a major resource for research in the history of Los Angeles journalism. The exhibit will feature approximately 50 items from the collection, highlighting Smith’s own wry commentary on life in L.A. Included will be original newspaper columns, drafts and galleys of his books, correspondence and fan mail, notebooks, photographs, and other materials.
