Constable: The Great Landscapes

John Constable was born in 1776 and is ranked with Turner as the most important British landscape artist of the nineteenth century. By 1819 he was settled in London and was harboring great ambitions to become elected as an associate of the Royal Academy. In this year he produced The White Horse, the first in a series of six large-scale canvases painted between 1819 and 1825, featuring the river Stour. This conscious decision to create works that by their very size attracted attention when exhibited, but also reflected a more classical style, marked a turning-point in Constable's career. Together with other famous later paintings such as Hadleigh Castle and Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows, these remarkable works, which are almost entirely responsible for  his present-day status as one of Britain's best-loved artists, are at the heart of this study. Bringing together for the first time these large-scale masterpieces, Constable: The Great Landscapes examines the artist's development of a single thematic concept, the life of the Suffolk river he had known since boyhood, gradually investing it with greater degrees of drama, heroic action and narrative weight. Each work is shown beside its full-scale compositional sketch, allowing a new understanding and appreciation of Constable's artistic process. These incredibly time-consuming sketches were an innovative tool used by Constable primarily to aid his move from working outdoors to the studio and yet, interestingly, they were a working practice that he maintained to the end of his career.

DVD - The English Masters - Constable (1996)

John Constable has been eternally associated with just one part of England, Suffolk. As a native of the area, he drew life-long inspiration from his home country in a timeless collection of landscape paintings. One of these, The Hay Wain, may well be the most famous painting ever created by an English artist. However, there were occasions when Constable struggled to gain recognition for his work until the critics in France began to appreciate his genius.
This fascinating program includes all new location footage including the country that inspired Constable, the Stour Valley in Suffolk, recreations and reconstructions, studies of the great works, and commentaries and analyses from leading authorities, art historians and scholars.

John Constable and the Theory of Landscape Painting (Hardcover)

by Ray Lambert

Ray Lambert's exhaustive study of John Constable's landscapes and relevant writings reveal Constable's high level of engagement with ideas on art and aesthetics and the decisive consequences for his style of painting. Constable's texts clearly predict his views. They also give an indication of the artist's knowledge of scientific, poetic, and aesthetic ideas that were relevant to the creation of a serious landscape art as well as a theory of landscape. Raymond Lambert is an Economic Adviser for the UK Department of Trade and Industry and an independent scholar of nineteenth-century British art.

Puzzle - The Hay Wein

The jigsaw puzzle traces its origins to the1760s when European mapmakers began gluing maps to wooden backings that were then cut into small pieces. Those puzzle maps became a popular educational tool. Similar maps are stillused today to help teach geography. As an Italian fine art publisher and puzzle maker, Ricordi traces its roots to 1808. During a history spanning nearly two centuries, the company became a noted creator of jigsaw puzzles and today offers the widest selection of fine art titles in the world. As you might expect, Ricordi makes quality puzzles, with beautifully produced images that become carefully designed pieces. Each piece is made of strong, recycled board that resists breaking and ultimately forms a wonderful finished piece of art attractive enough to frame.

John Constable (Paperback)
by William Vaughan

Hugely popular, John Constable (1776-1837) is often cited as the most genuine painter of the English countryside. His iconic images of rural life and landscape are endlessly reproduced, evoking a vanished idyll. Looking beyond the myths that have grown up around the artist, and drawing on a close reading of both his work and letters, William Vaughan provides a fresh understanding of the scope of Constable's achievement. William Vaughan is Pevsner Professor of History of Art at the School of History of Art, Film and Visual Meida, Birkbeck College, London.

Paint and Color in Decoration (Hardcover)
by Farrow, Ball, Ivan Terestchenko

Paint and Color in Decoration celebrates the work of some of the greatest names in interior design, from Robert Adam to David Hicks, and reveals the techniques and materials they pioneered. It's a fascinating history of 400 years of paint, color, and decorative style from Farrow & Ball, the world's leading manufacturer of traditional and modern fine paints.

This volume explores the process of making fine paints and the varying effects produced by different formulations, finishes, and painting methods. Through a wealth of illustrations and in-depth analysis, the book demonstrates what we all instinctively know: color is an essential element in interior design and decoration. The colors have names almost as rich as the history of the houses they adorn, with Passage Yellow, Feasting Green, and Cook's Blue among a panoply of hues whose origins and adaptations for the home are described here in detail. A source of inspiration for professional and amateur decorators and interior designers alike, Paint and Color in Decoration contains a wealth of ideas and practical information at a time when historic paints have never been more in fashion.

Tom Helme has been at Farrow & Ball since 1992. As the adviser on interior decoration to Britain's esteemed National Trust, he developed the colors for the National Trust range of paints manufactured by Farrow & Ball. Ivan Terestchenko first began photographing interiors for Farrow & Ball in 2000. He regularly contributes to leading design and lifestyle magazines including Vogue and The World of Interiors.
