CONFERENCE: This Side of Paradise: Body and Landscape in L.A. Photographs June 21, 2008 (Saturday), 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. In conjunction with the exhibit, this symposium features artists, writers, curators, and academics who will explore the exhibition themes of landscape, body, and regional artistic practice as they relate to the long history of Los Angeles photography. $10. CONFERENCE: Sunbelt Rising: The Politics of Space, Place, and Region in the American South and Southwest July 19, 2008 (Saturday), 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Sunbelt, a region born of recent history, has been steadily drawing Americans from older cities to burgeoning metropolitan centers like Los Angeles since World War II. Warmer temperatures and air conditioning only begin to tell the story. This conference will explore the political, economic, and social transformations that have been making the Sunbelt into a unified region rivaling traditional centers of power in the East. $10. CONFERENCE: Permanence and the Built Environment in the 18th-Century Atlantic World October 3 & 4, 2008 (Friday & Saturday), 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Why do some buildings, cityscapes, and landscapes survive for posterity and others disappear? This conference will explore the issue of structural permanence and impermanence in the transatlantic communities of Western Europe, West Africa, the Caribbean, and the eastern coasts of the American mainland colonies during the age of empire. $25. DISTINGUISHED FELLOW LECTURE: Petitioners and Fund-Raisers: Women's Collective Political Activisim in Early Modern England and America October 28, 2008 (Tuesday), 7:30 p.m. Before women sought the vote, they joined together in England and America in the attempt to influence government policies. Mary Beth Norton, Professor of History, Cornell University, and the Los Angeles Times DIstinguished Fellow, will discuss the activities of female petitioners during the English CIvil War and fundraising by the Philadelphia Ladies Association of 1780 -- and men's negative reactions to those actions.
