It has extensive collections of manuscripts, rare books, photographs, prints and ephemera, and scholars are cordially invited to use them. In research materials for historical study, all periods of American history, from the period of discovery to the present, are represented.
The Huntington's recently completed Early California Population Project (ECPP) provides public access to all the information contained in California's historic mission registers, records that are of unique and vital importance to the study of California, the American Southwest, and colonial America. Within the baptism, marriage, and burial records of each of the California missions sits an extraordinary wealth of unique information on the Indians, soldiers, and settlers of Alta California from 1769 - 1850.
In November 2006, The Huntington acquired an extraordinary addition to its library collections: the gift of the entire Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Burndy Library, composed of some 67,000 rare books and reference volumes, as well as a collection of scientific instruments. Combined with the Huntington’s holdings, the collection becomes one of the most extensive in the history of science and technology in the world. After cataloguing and processing, the collection will be available for scholars in the summer of 2008. Accompanying the library is the Dibner History of Science Program at the Huntington. This program will fund long- and short-term fellowships, an annual conference, a lecture series, and an ongoing seminar.
