Maurice Merlin and the American Scene, 1930–1947

Maurice Merlin studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1929 to 1931 addressing the social tensions that faced the city and the nation during the 1930s with images of strikes, unemployed workers, and Detroit’s African American community. This exhibition includes work of fellow Detroit-based artists with paintings, posters, and watercolors on loan from collections in Los Angeles and Detroit, and is the first museum exhibition devoted primarily to Merlin’s career.

Who was the Blue Boy? Get to know The Huntington’s most famous teenager as instructor Laura Moede shares the fascinating story behind Gainsborough’s masterpiece. Chinese tea is steeped in history that can be traced back to its origins in the wild forests of Yunnan Province. Explore the rich traditions of Chinese tea and sample some rare varieties, including aged Pu-erh tea (known as the "drinkable antique"), in a class presented by Angie Lee of 1001 Plateaus and Linda Louie of Bana Tea Company. Organized in partnership with a research project at the University of Cambridge and the National Maritime Museum on the history of the British Board of Longitude, this conference will place the work of the board on navigation and voyages of scientific exploration in wider and international context. Papers will consider the methods, techniques, and interests of oceanic travel and position-finding in a period of dramatic economic, political, and social crisis. $25.
