Maurice Merlin studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1929 to 1931 addressing the social tensions that faced the city and the nation during the 1930s with images of strikes, unemployed workers, and Detroit’s African American community. This exhibition includes work of fellow Detroit-based artists with paintings, posters, and watercolors on loan from collections in Los Angeles and Detroit, and is the first museum exhibition devoted primarily to Merlin’s career.

This focused exhibition features fifteen rarely seen drawings and watercolors by marine artists such as John Thomas Serres, Charles Bentley, and Samuel Owen, depicting important battles and dramatic, romantic views of wind-tossed ships revealing a nation passing from the threat of war to command a prosperous peace.

For a fresh idea in floral design, combine flowers and citrus fruits. Kit Wertz and Casey Schwartz of Flower Duet will teach students how to design eye-catching arrangements displayed in a clear vase lined with citrus slices. Fresh fruit or leafy greens? It’s a toss-up!  Kids will beg for seconds when they learn the secret for adding sunny flavor to winter salad greens by mixing up their own fresh lemon-lime dressing. Punam Bhakta leads this hands on workshop, complete with a fruit-picking session in the Huntington orange groves. Ages 7–12. Fee includes one accompanying adult. Members: $20. Non-Members: $25. Happy Chinese New Year! Get creative with the team from Flower Duet and celebrate the “Year of the Snake” by creating a fun flower arrangement with citrus accents to bring good luck. Ages 7–12. Fee includes one accompanying adult. Members: $25. Non-Members: $30. Registration: 626-405-2128.





Lecture - Great Rosarians of the World

Two major figures in the world of roses will be the featured speakers at the annual Great Rosarians of the World lecture, an event that celebrates the men and women who have made significant contributions to the world of roses. Walter H. Lewis, senior botanist at Missouri Botanical Garden, is an expert on species roses; Malcolm Manners, chairman of horticultural science at Southern Florida College, is well known for his research on the rose mosaic virus and for promoting Old Garden Roses. In a dramatic departure from tradition, The Huntington presents the first exhibition of contemporary paintings and sculpture to be displayed inside the Huntington Art Gallery, showcasing the work of Los Angeles–based artists Lesley Vance and Ricky Swallow.
