Shakespeare at The Huntington is a unique, two-week institute designed primarily for secondary teachers of English and Drama. The Institute focuses on teaching Shakespeare through performance. The course features an international faculty of scholars, educators and theatre professionals, and takes advantage of one of the world's great libraries and research centers, its extraordinary gardens, and its proximity to the entertainment capital of the world.
Topics covered include scene study, verse and text work, voice, movement, classroom pedagogy, theatre history, and criticism. Attendance at selected plays is required during the two-week course. Outside reading and a final evaluation are also required.
The workshop will focus on “Mercy, Justice & Power” in Shakespeare’s plays. The selected texts will be: The Merchant of Venice, Measure for Measure, Taming of the Shrew and Henry VIII.
The course is presented by the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens, with the assistance of the Los Angeles Branch of the English Speaking Union.
Interested teachers should submit an application form by May 14, 2010. Applicants will be notified by June 15, 2010 of acceptance. Tuition for the two-week program is $250, due by July 1, 2010. Enrollment is limited to 22.
