Using the great resources of the Library, this program introduces written and printed communication through the ages, including books and documents marking the significant developments in the growth of British and American societies. Students will discover how diverse audiences gained access to knowledge as literacy expanded.

PAPER, PENS & PROSE: DISCOVERING EARLY MANUSCRIPTS
Grades 4 through 9

 

History-Social Science Standards Assessed: 6.2, 7.8

 

This program introduces students to the way in which the first books were produced, how paper and inks were made, and what scribes used in writing. Students will see original manuscripts and the Gutenberg Bible. A classroom activity will follow in which students will try calligraphy, illumination, and bookbinding.

EXPLORATIONS IN AMERICAN HISTORY
Grades 5, 8, and 11

 

History-Social Science Content Standards: 5.5 Causes of the American Revolution
History-Social Science Analysis Skill Standards: Research, Evidence, and Point-of-View
English-Language Arts Content Standards: Reading Comprehension: 2.3

 

Designed to complement the American history curriculum, this program focuses on primary source materials and artworks that document important events in our nation’s past. Students will visit both the Library and Scott Galleries of American Art.

BEAUTIFUL SCIENCE
Grades 7 through 10

 

Addresses California Academic Standards
I.E. 1.k. Recognize the accumulative nature of scientific evidence

 

Students discover how great ideas in science have changed over time while practicing their literacy skills in the library exhibition “Beautiful Science: Ideas That Have Changed the World.” Working in small teams, students analyze the exhibition to determine its main messages and then share their findings with the group.
