Rock-Solid Progress"Rock-Solid Progress"

The next phase of the

Garden of Flowing Fragrance

流芳園 is gathering momentum—and heft. We have working drawings from our partners in Suzhou, a dynamic volunteer committee (the President’s Council for the Chinese Garden) led by Edmond H. Pi 畢新東, and a long list of donors and friends, including the leadership in Jiangsu Province. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jiangsu recently granted permission for The Huntington to acquire 700 more tons of Tai Hu-style rock, a traditional element of Chinese gardens. They also notified us that the city of Suzhou would be donating one large “peak rock”—a massive, naturally weathered stone used as a sculptural focal point in the garden—and Jiangsu Province will be donating two such rocks. These donations, and the opportunity to obtain the remaining Tai Hu rock for this phase of construction, have led to a flurry of activity to raise the $500,000 needed. As of press time, we had raised $329,916 toward our goal.
