About the Featured Artists

Margaret Batjer (director of chamber music), a violin soloist, chamber musician, and teacher, has established herself as a versatile and respected artist worldwide. She has served as concertmaster of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra since 1998 and was recently appointed the director of Colburn School’s Music Academy.

Juho Pohjonen (piano), lauded for his “impeccable technique” (The Washington Post) and “elegant musicianship” (The New York Times), is in demand internationally as an orchestral soloist, recitalist, and chamber performer. An ardent exponent of Scandinavian music, Pohjonen’s growing discography offers a showcase of music by such Finnish compatriots as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Kaija Saariaho, and Jean Sibelius.

Robert Brophy (viola) performs with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, LA Opera, and many West Coast chamber music series. He is featured with Nigel Kennedy in a quartet for Kennedy’s new release Greatest Hits (EMI) and has performed alongside Martha Argerich, Mischa Maisky, Michel Dalberto, and Dmitri Sitkovetsky. He won the viola audition with LACO in December 2011.

Andrew Shulman (principal cello) is the former principal cellist of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Philharmonia Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has given solo and chamber performances at the Royal Palace of Stockholm, Wigmore Hall, and Buckingham Palace. Shulman has been LACO’s principal cellist for 14 years.

David J. Grossman (principal bass) is a double bassist and composer who enjoys a multifaceted musical career on both the East and West coasts. Born and educated in New York City, he joined the New York Philharmonic as its youngest member in spring 2000 and has continued to be a member.
