Filming and Photography

Visitors are invited to take vacation-style snapshots and videos at The Huntington for personal use.

Posed portrait photography, including but not limited to personal portraits, headshots, engagement, bridal/wedding, family pictures, senior portraits, prom, graduation, quinceañera, and maternity, whether taken by an amateur or professional photographer, must be scheduled, in advance, as a Portrait Photography Session through the Filming & Photography department and requires a fee and city permit. No walk-up requests are granted.

General Policies for All Photography and Videography
  • Personal, hand-held cameras, video cameras, and camera phones are welcome. No flash photography is allowed inside any buildings but may be used in the gardens.
  • A tripod or monopod is permitted for personal nature photography in outdoor spaces only. Please avoid use of this equipment in The Rose Hills Foundation Conservatory, in the Children’s Garden, and on narrow paths within the gardens.
  • Professional camera equipment, including but not limited to lights, hand-held microphones, and reflectors, is not allowed except under contract.
  • Props, models, costumes, and wardrobe changes are prohibited except under contract.
  • Drones and selfie sticks are not permitted.
  • The Huntington is not responsible for any personal injury or loss, theft, or damage to equipment or other property.
  • No unauthorized photography sessions are allowed at any time on The Huntington property including in our parking lot and perimeters.

While shooting on our grounds, please follow our photography guidelines and etiquette.

Photography Guidelines and Etiquette

Visitors found violating any of our policies will be asked to end their activity and will be escorted off the property.

  • The Huntington reserves the right to refuse admittance for photography/filming and/or change its photo policy without advance notice.
  • Photography at certain site locations may be restricted at any time with or without notice.
  • Huntington staff members may approach photographers and parties at any time and request to see the scheduled photography permit and reservation.
  • Follow all instructions given by Huntington personnel. Photographers must move if asked by any staff member and may be asked to restrict activities to certain places or times.
  • Please be courteous to visitors at all times. Respect the needs and privacy of other visitors and do not distract staff or volunteers from their primary duties. Activities that may disturb a visitor’s experience, such as music or games, are prohibited. The Huntington reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to withhold and/or withdraw permission to photograph or videotape on its premises if it is a disruption and/or is perceived that it might endanger its collections or other visitors.
  • Avoid damage to collections. Please do not touch, deface, or remove statuary, art, architecture, garden or other collections materials, fencing, stanchions and tape, or furniture for any reason.
  • Do not walk in any planted, mulched, or wooded area for any reason. Always stay on designated paths and turf areas. Please do not climb the trees.
  • Do not sit on any locations that are not designated seating areas, including balustrades, bridges, and walls.
  • Do not hang any objects, including props, lighting, clothing, or bags, from trees, plants, architectural features, or any other parts of The Huntington.
  • Do not enter or place anything into bodies of water.
  • No entry allowed in areas designated as restricted.
  • Many artworks on display at The Huntington are subject to copyright and other intellectual property laws. It is the responsibility of the photographer to secure appropriate permissions for the use of artwork images. Permission to photograph at The Huntington does not include permission to use images of copyrighted artwork and The Huntington is unable to provide such permissions.
