New Technologies and Approaches to Paper and Ink in Newton’s Manuscripts

Reconsider the material form of Isaac Newton’s manuscripts through new technologies and visual analysis.
Lectures

Join Professors Scott Mandelbrote and William R. Newman for an insightful discussion exploring how new technologies for imaging, image processing, and the visual analysis of paper and ink allow us to reconsider the material form of Isaac Newton’s manuscripts. These developments allow us to reformulate questions about the date and meaning of the natural philosophy, chemistry, and theology in the writings of Newton, one of the most important early modern writers, and to make new suggestions about his work and career. Following the talk, Joel A. Klein, Molina Curator for the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences, will offer a hands-on demonstration of several ink and paper technologies.
