Photography Walk: Golden Hour in the Chinese Garden

This new program invites guests to slow down and view the landscape of The Huntington through a camera lens. In this lesson, explore the Chinese Garden and learn how to use the natural light of golden hour to find artistic vignettes and take dramatic photos.

On this guided evening walk at The Huntington, participants will use photography as a lens for harnessing natural light and viewing the world in fantastic ways. Whether you’re a professional or a hobbyist, and whether you use a smartphone or analog camera, all photography levels and camera formats are welcome. This Thursday evening session will take participants through the Chinese Garden, focusing the lens on architecture and landscape to find dramatic forms and artistic stories during golden hour.

Lesson Plan

Instructor Jason E.C. Wright will give a presentation about photography tips and principles. Then, apply what you learned as you explore the Chinese Garden, followed by a classroom recap to discuss results and best practices.

What to Bring

  • Camera (digital, film, smartphone)
  • Notebook or journal (for taking notes)

Day of Program

  • Check in with Education staff at Admission window #10 beginning at 4:30 p.m.
  • Please bring your Admission QR code or ticket confirmation.
  • Admission is included in the price of your ticket.
  • The class will involve walking on both paved and gravel paths for distances up to 1 mile. Comfortable shoes are recommended.
