About the Instructor

Kathy Chyan is a retired art professor with a B.A. in Chinese art (calligraphy, painting, and classics), an M.A. in Western art (painting and drawing), and an M.F.A. in ceramic sculpture. She studied Tai Chi Chuan/Taijiquan and Qigong in private and intimate groups as a teenager. Later, she studied at Chen Village in Henan Province, where Tai Chi Chuan originated, and at Beijing Sport University. Chyan has taught tai chi and art for over 30 years at community colleges, and she has taught tai chi at The Huntington since 2008. She sees tai chi as an art form that contributes to mental and physical health, likening it to body poetry or the painting process in meditation.
