Celebrate the life and work of Sargent Claude Johnson, as featured in The Huntington's temporary exhibition on view now until May 20, 2024. In this class, participants will tour the exhibition which speaks about our shared cultural heritage and then head back to the classroom for a hands-on cooking class with Maite Gomez-Rejón of ArtBites, to prepare a meal inspired by Johnson's travels.

This program will be held indoors in the Ahmanson Classroom.
A portion of the class will include gallery and garden visits so please wear comfortable walking shoes.

Maite Gomez-Rejón has been exploring the nexus of art and culinary history for over a decade, through lectures, cooking classes, and tastings presented at museums and cultural centers across the country. She has worked in the Education Departments of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the J. Paul Getty Museum, has taught art history at the college level, and worked as a private chef and caterer. A native of South Texas, Maite earned a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin, an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a Grande Diplome from the French Culinary Institute in New York City. She worked in restaurant kitchens in France and Mexico before combining her two passions of art and food in 2007 when she founded ArtBites.
Feb. 17–May 20, 2024 | This exhibition of 43 works is dedicated to the work of Sargent Claude Johnson, the California artist whose uplifting portrayals of people of color made him the West Coast’s key connection to the Harlem Renaissance.
