Artist and author Richard E. Scott will lead eight online drawing classes that explore the art, architecture, and gardens of the Huntington. These engaging classes, conducted via Zoom, are ideal for artists of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced. Participants will enhance their observation and drawing abilities while enriching their visual experiences.

About the Instructor
Richard E. Scott
Richard E. Scott is a painter, teacher, and writer. He teaches drawing and painting at The Huntington in San Marino, California, The Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, California, and art workshops throughout the U.S. and Europe. For 25 years he has taught at numerous universities including Cal Poly Pomona, UCLA, Art Center, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UNLV. His artworks have been published in various art and design magazines, periodicals and books. He has written for various art and design magazines and in 2013 published a compendium on drawing called “Sketching – from Square One to Trafalgar Square.” He resides in Sierra Madre, California.
Week 1: How to Accurately Draw Anything, Part 1
Fri., June 13 | In the first session, students learn how to enhance their visual perception and draw anything with confidence and exceptional accuracy. A variety of engaging and enjoyable subjects are illustrated using this method.
Week 2: How to Accurately Draw Anything, Part 2
Fri., June 20 | Students explore more advanced ideas and drawing techniques as they apply the approach to depict more complex subjects.
Week 3: How to Draw Form & Light
Fri., June 27 | Students learn an effective and user-friendly way to capture the forms of three-dimensional objects in their sketchbooks. The behavior of light is explored, and various drawing techniques are demonstrated.

Week 4: Drawing from Both Sides of the Brain
Fri., July 11 | Students learn to utilize both hemispheres of the brain to simplify and understand complex subjects and represent them with greater skill and ease.
Week 5: Conducting with a Pencil
Fri., July 18 | Students learn to think differently when drawing, capturing the beautiful nuances of a subject more artfully.
Week 6: A Most Interesting Illusion, Part 1
Fri., July 25 | Students learn a better way to understand and draw in linear perspective. With insights from Renaissance artists, through Impressionism, to modernism, students apply various concepts to enhance their understanding and skills in drawing from perspective.
Week 7: A Most Interesting Illusion, Part 2
Fri., Aug. 1 | Students learn more advanced concepts to more easily depict the appearance of three-dimensional objects in their drawings.
Week 8: The Poetry of Drawing
Fri., Aug. 8 | Students learn to simplify, emphasize, and edit a subject matter to create drawings with greater personal meaning.
Students are welcome to use any drawing materials they prefer. For those interested, below is a listing of what the instructor uses for drawing.
