Niloufar Emamifar

Three Inches And A Half is a single sculptural work divided into two parts, which are installed opposite each other in the gallery. Niloufar Emamifar considers the work to be a found object of sorts. Her process was to cast the space between two Palestinian-owned buildings in East Los Angeles. She filled the space with silicone that inadvertently peeled off layers of paint, indexes of the past, upon removal. The height and width of the resulting sculptures were determined by her reach and how much material she could stuff into the interstice. Emamifar’s work often focuses on architecture as a means to consider contracts of ownership, notions of property, and the law in general. She is interested in the genealogy of spaces and territories and how the interplay between material facts and the fictions that underlie real estate shape the history of buildings.

In Made in L.A. 2020: a version, the artist's work is present in two institutions, across Los Angeles. See Niloufar Emamifar's work on view at the Hammer.
