Entry to mark The Huntington's Centennial Celebration

SAN MARINO, Calif. — The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens announced today that it will enter a float in the Jan. 1, 2020 Rose Parade®. The beloved Southern California destination known for its rare research materials, inspiring art collections, and enchanting botanical gardens will be celebrating its Centennial year at the time of the parade. The 2020 float will mark the first time in 50 years that The Huntington has been represented at the event, which is broadcast worldwide.

“During our Centennial Celebration, we want to welcome a wide audience to engage with us, and invite them to experience all that The Huntington represents—historical and literary treasures, exquisite botanical gardens, and astonishing holdings in art—and see for themselves why the intellectual heft and the magic of this place resonates even more powerfully today, 100 years after its founding,” said Huntington President Karen R. Lawrence. “The broad exposure of the Tournament of Roses® Parade will be a wonderful way to share The Huntington, in one crystallized moment, worldwide.”

The Huntington’s Centennial Celebration runs from September 2019 to September 2020 with a yearlong series of activities that includes exhibitions, symposia, talks, special art installations in the gardens, performances, and website features that invite everyone to participate in a convergence of ideas.

The last time The Huntington was represented in the Rose Parade was in 1969, when the city of San Marino sponsored an entry that featured floral depictions of the famous paintings Pinkie and The Blue Boy, an imposing replica of the historic Library building’s facade, and the Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. The float won the Grand Marshal’s Trophy.

“We are so happy that The Huntington will be participating this year,” said Pasadena Tournament of Roses President Laura Farber. “It embodies the idea of inspiration and is a perfect fit for this year’s parade theme, ‘The Power of Hope’.”
