Summer Institutes

We offer two weeklong summer institutes for K-12 teachers. Explore the collections, attend scholarly lectures, connect with local educators, and undertake hands-on training with educational experts as you learn how to use primary sources to inspire students in the classroom.

Huntington Voices

June 11-15, 2018
For K-12 grade teachers. Enrollment limited to 30.

Celebrating some of the voices in our collections, from William Shakespeare to Octavia E. Butler, this five-day summer institute guides teachers on how to use Huntington primary sources to inspire student voice. Learn how to use our sources to inspire your learners to engage in critical thinking, creativity, and visual and performing arts. Participants receive a stipend of $500 for participating in all five days of the summer institute.

Nature, California's Place, and the American Dream

June 25-29, 2018
For 4-8 grade teachers only. Enrollment limited to 30.
Especially suitable for teachers of History, Social Science, and Science.

This popular summer institute continues to support the teaching of 19th- and 20th-century Californian and American History. This year, refreshed content considers the ways in which human interaction with the natural world has shaped the state of California for thousands of years. The course provides teachers with new pathways for using primary source documents to address themes such as growth, conflict, reform movements, and environmental change in the classroom.Participants receive a stipend of $500 for participating in all five days of the summer institute.

Both programs are now full. Applicants will be notified by May 15, 2018 of acceptance.
