To support visiting research fellows, we are constructing Scholars Grove—a new residential community for scholars as they explore The Huntington’s world-renowned collections. The thoughtfully designed housing project will provide fellows with space to focus on their research while fostering meaningful connections with peers.

For more than 20 years, the lack of housing has been a barrier for some fellows. Scholars Grove will provide researchers with convenient and reliable accommodations while strengthening the institution’s nationally recognized fellowship program. The project marks a major milestone in The Huntington’s five-year strategic plan to expand access to our collections.

Scholars Grove is made possible by a generous $40 million gift from the late Charles T. Munger, a philanthropist and longtime supporter of The Huntington.

“For more than 20 years, housing for The Huntington’s research fellows has been a pressing challenge. While we have offered prestigious fellowships, the lack of housing has prevented some early-career scholars and faculty at under-resourced institutions from accepting them. The development of Scholars Grove marks a major milestone in our five-year strategic plan to broaden access to our world-class collections.”

Thoughtful Design, Seamless Integration

  • Scholars Grove will feature 33 residential units across seven one- and two-story buildings, arranged around a shared green space.
  • A central commons building will serve as a hub for gatherings, fostering academic and interdisciplinary exchange.
  • Designed with care, the community will blend seamlessly into The Huntington’s historic landscape, preserving 150 trees, including a rare Magnolia pacifica Tarahumara—the only known mature specimen in North America—several historic oaks, and a research grove of avocado trees, one dating back to Henry E. Huntington’s time.

Research Fellows

Each year, The Huntington awards more than 150 research fellowships, most of which are short-term grants lasting one to three months. Approximately two dozen long-term fellowships, lasting nine months, are awarded annually. Scholars Grove will offer housing options to Huntington research fellows year-round.
