SAN MARINO, Calif. – Mitchell Morris, a seasoned technology executive with 18 years’ experience in both for-profit and nonprofit settings, has been named Chief Information Officer at The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, Laura Skandera Trombley, president of The Huntington, announced this week. Morris began on Feb. 23; he is the first to hold the position.
“The Huntington, for me, is where it all comes together,” he said. “It’s a place where I can tie my deep love of art, literature, and botany to my career interests in computing and technology.” Before pursuing a career in information technology, Morris was himself a research biologist with a specialization in botanical and environmental science.
Morris comes to The Huntington after serving as the vice president for information technology at the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials, the nonprofit organization that develops and publishes plumbing and mechanical codes, provides educational tools, and conducts product testing and certification to help protect public health on matters having to do with water and wastewater management. While there, he led his IT team through a substantial growth period for the organization, necessitating a deep understanding of the organization’s mission and goals and the degree to which technology could be used to support those goals.
“As we continue to evolve and expand our programs and broaden our reach, having Mitch help lead us solidly into the technology future will be key,” said Trombley. “We are excited to have Mitch on board and thrilled to begin this new chapter at The Huntington.”
Technology at The Huntington underpins the institution’s work in myriad ways: from the iPads uploaded with information to help amplify a visitor’s experience in the Huntington Art Gallery and the computers that monitor irrigation in the botanical gardens, to the system that manages the research library’s vast online catalogue of collections.
