  • It's a New Academic Year
  • Brett Rushforth Named New Editor-in-Chief of the Huntington Library Quarterly

Sept. 2023 - Welcome to the start of the new year in the Research Division. Our new cohort of Long-Term Fellows has arrived and are busy exploring our collections, getting to know their office mates, and exploring life in Southern California. We have a full slate of orientation events planned to welcome them to The Huntington, including a Welcome Dinner and tours of the art galleries and botanical gardens. On Oct. 5 and 6, they will gather for a two-day symposium to share their research projects and learn more about the collecting areas of our superb curatorial division.

This month also kicks off our academic programming. Our first conference of the year will take place Sept. 22–23 in Rothenberg Hall, and we have two lectures scheduled in October. All our events are open to the public. We hope you’ll come!

Finally, I am delighted to announce that Dr. Brett Rushforth will be joining us as the new Editor-in-Chief of the Huntington Library Quarterly starting July 1, 2024. After a competitive national search, Brett emerged as the candidate with the most extensive scholarly and academic publishing experience and we are thrilled that he will be bringing his capacious vision of the field of Early Modern Studies to the Quarterly. Brett is a scholar of the early modern Atlantic world whose research focuses on comparative slavery, Native North America, and French colonialism and empire. His broad interests and deep scholarly networks will help move the Quarterly in exciting new directions while respecting its legacy as one of the premier journals in the literature, history, and art of Britain and America from the sixteenth through the long eighteenth century. Currently an Associate Professor of History at the University of Oregon, Brett will be finishing up the academic year at Oregon before joining us in July.
